Short Bio

I’ve been in this field long enough to remember Fortran common blocks and IBM OS/MVT JCL. I graduated from British Columbia’s beautiful Simon Fraser University in 1988 with an MSc. Computer Science.

My technical career started with designing call processing software for cellular telephone switches and over the last twenty years I seem to always come back to the telecom industry. One of the non telecom projects that I am nostalgic about is the redevelopment of the signaling software for the Vancouver SkyTrain system. Not only did I have the opportunity to work with some highly talented and disciplined software developers, I can also point to something big, beautiful, and physical and say that I was a part of that.

Ten years ago I started the journey to the dark side when I began to spend more and more of my time managing products and projects than writing code. Simply I discovered that in managing projects I could make a real difference. Three years ago I went completely bonkers and decided to also pursue a PhD at the University of British Columbia. With my usual penchant for doing things the hard way rather than take the easy route, I’ve been integrating social science research methodology into engineering to develop a theory for why “people trump process” and how to take advantage of it.
