Push, Pull, What is the difference
In this talk Ola Ellnestam explains the differences between push and pull in a software development context.
The difference between push and pull is described and discussed. Followed by examples from other industries. Mentioning Toyota and Dell. After this rather brief introduction follows a simple and easy to understand exercise.
10 minutes : introduction
5 minutes : push production
5 minutes : pull production
25 minutes : discussions
Short introduction to the topic followed by an exercise.
Produce (fold) paper planes in a simulated assembly line/factory.
- 4 persons from the audience are set up at stations in a production line with a work area in front of them.
- They are taught how to fold a simple paper plane.
- The third person get a much harder task than the other three.
This is repeated twice. First using push then pull techniques.
After the exercise and introduction there is room for ~20 minutes of discussions where questions like …
- What happened
- Where is the the waste in this process
- Why did the different approaches produce as much as they did
- What are the advantages of each approach
- How do we implement this in software development efforts
… should pop up or are ‘inserted’ into the discuss by the presenter.
- How push and pull differs
- How to implement pull techniques in a software development effort
- What waste is
- How pull eliminates some waste
